Two months prior to the movie's October 24, 2014, release date, Lionsgate Films acquired the distribution rights. After an effective marketing effort transformed its image from throwaway entertainment to a high-profile event hosted by a friendly top star, John Wick made $86 million worldwide, exceeding box office expectations and becoming a moderate hit. Reviews for its action scenes and flair were largely favorable. John Wick was praised by critics as Reeves' return in a part that suited his acting prowess. The most unique and captivating aspect of the movie was hailed as its mythology of a criminal underground with customs and regulations.

Video games, comic books, the prequel television series The Continental (2023), the spin-off movie Ballerina (2025), and three sequels (John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)) are all part of the popular franchise that started with John Wick.
